If utility bills are too much, here's help
Overnight temperatures are in the 40’s and 30's in Vermont and the heating season is upon us. Consumers who need assistance paying for their heating bills, or who need information about how they can reduce their power and heating costs, or who have a problem with an electric company or fuel dealer can call or text Vermont 211 for information and resources.
For example, income-eligible customers can qualify for discounted gas and electric services through Vermont Gas Systems and Green Mountain Power, respectively, programs that are currently underused.
You can apply now for Seasonal Fuel Assistance through the Department for Children and Families' Economic Services Division. Later in the season, Crisis Fuel Assistance is available at Community Action Agencies. It helps with heating fuel emergencies, involving home heat and electrical disconnection notices.
Other services include furnace repair and replacement, which you can apply for through your regional community action agency.
